Dr. Lu is the Dean of UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Dr. Lu was formerly the Director of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2012 to 2017. He led a federal bureau with an annual budget of more than $1.2 billion, and serves more than 57 million women, children, and families nationwide. During his tenure, Dr. Lu transformed key federal programs in maternal and child health, launched major initiatives to reduce maternal, infant, and child mortality in the U.S., and was awarded the prestigious Herbert H. Humphrey Award for Service to America.

Dr. Lu joined the federal government from UCLA Schools of Medicine and Public Health, where he was a professor of obstetrics-gynecology and public health. He was best known for his research on racial-ethnic disparities in birth outcomes from a life course perspective, and received numerous awards for his teaching. Dr. Lu has served on three Institute of Medicine committees. As an obstetrician, Dr. Lu has attended over a thousand births, and has been voted one of the Best Doctors in America since 2005.
